Renewable energy will be a critical ingredient to making the global economy sustainable and less dependent on oil producing countries. However, renewable energy sources are inherently intermittent, and high percentages of renewable energy on the electric grids create challenges, in maintaining the reliability of the power supply and in controlling the financial risks associated with hourly, daily, and seasonal price volatility. Scientific computing, broadly defined as the application of advanced computational techniques and mathematical algorithms to tackle large and complex scientific and engineering problems, has ushered in a new era of sophistication in power system modeling that allows us to tackle the complexities associated with an increasingly variable and renewable grid. This talk will introduce the audience to the intricacies of power-system modeling and will discuss how Bravos Energía, a company focused on building next-generation power system models, is harnessing scientific computing and sophisticated optimization models to generate price forecasts - and trading strategies used across different power markets in North America. The talk is intended for anyone with an interest in complex computational and optimization problems, including graduate students in the physical sciences curious about how their analytical skills can be applied in the energy industry.
