Rich Sauer

Rich Sauer is a Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel at Microsoft’s global headquarters in Redmond, Washington. Rich has nearly 20-years of experience working at the intersection of law, public policy, politics, regulation, technology, and now including ethics and human rights, as a senior member of the Microsoft’s Corporate, External and Legal Affairs department.

Rich currently leads the legal and government affairs support for Microsoft’s Artificial Intelligence & Research team, which includes the world-renowned Microsoft Research Labs. This provides him with the opportunity to work with some of the smartest people on the planet who are defining tomorrow’s technology and pioneering breakthrough advances in machine learning, pattern recognition and other AI-related technologies that are being rapidly pushed out of the labs and into Microsoft’s mainstream products and services. He also serves as member and Secretary of Microsoft’s Aether Committee which advises Microsoft’s Senior Leadership Team on Microsoft’s approach to responsibly addressing ethics and societal issues raised by AI technologies, and he regularly advise on such issues.

Prior to his current role, Rich has served in a number of senior roles in support of the company’s legal and government affairs priorities. He’s led large and diverse teams spread across the globe in over 50 national capitals, overseen the legal support for the company’s global sales function helping the company surpass $100 billion in annual sales revenue, he’s helped create new opportunities and expand addressable markets for Microsoft’s products and services by advancing the company’s public policy priorities and shaping regulatory environments, and he’s led the international efforts to establish Microsoft as a leading provider of cloud computing technology and a company that is trusted to secure customer data and protect individual privacy rights.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Rich worked for the New York City-based law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell. He’s a graduate of the American University’s Washington College of Law in Washington, D.C. and the Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.

Rich is married with two children and lives in the Greater Seattle area.
