4ta Semana de la Complejidad

C3: 10 Years Building Knowledge

The Centro de Ciencias de la Complejidad (C3-UNAM) began in 2008 as a virtual center connecting the exact, natural, social, and human sciences. On October 28, 2015, the building designed by Serrano Arquitectos officially opened its doors, becoming a space for collaboration, innovation, and dialogue. In 2025, we celebrate a decade since its inauguration, marking a trajectory of impactful projects and academic networks at national and international levels.

4th Semana de la Complejidad

All the world’s major problems – climate change, environmental degradation, chronic-degenerative diseases, emerging diseases, poverty, inequity, violence, … - are “complex”, representing enormous challenges for both science and society. Unfortunately, our progress in solving, or at least mitigating, these problems, in spite of a huge investment in human and financial capital, has not been up to the challenge.

Traditional disciplinary and reductionist approaches have not had the desired impact.

CENTRO DE CIENCIAS DE LA COMPLEJIDAD (C3)

Designed by architect J. Francisco Serrano, it was built in 2014 and inaugurated on October 28, 2015.

Part of C3's objective is to generate interdisciplinary research to address national problems, so its strategic location is at a convergence point between spaces dedicated to the arts, science, and humanities. The building is sustainable in terms of water and energy consumption, with few supports, to minimize environmental impact. The buildings around the central courtyard have covered central voids that allow views of the volcanic rock terrain and allow natural ventilation.
